I will be postponing this Saturday’s “A Little Service, A Little Brunch” because The Red Pump Project will be marching in the Bud Billiken Parade this Saturday! The historical parade celebrates its 80th anniversary this year and is the nation’s oldest and largest African-American parade. We are sooo honored and excited to be a part of this event! I can still remember marching as a child through my old neighborhood. The excitement as my mother brushed our hair, dressed us, and lined us up to march with the other kids. Started in 1929 as a way for the Chicago Defender to celebrate its’ paperboys, the parade has marked the unofficial back-to-school season for generations of African-Americans in Chicago since then.
If you’re in Chicago, the parade will travel south along M.L. King Drive beginning at Oakwood Blvd and ending at Washington Park. The city expects 1 million people to line the parade route and attend the post-parade picniv in Washington Park, so make sure that you are there in time to enjoy the festivities!
Head on over to my Examiner page to learn about the $300K in scholarship dollars to be awarded to Chicago students this year through the Chicago Defender charities. Family fun and college funding in one. Doesn’t get any better, folks!

The Boys and Girls Club of Chicago (BGCC) serves over 13,000 children and teens across the city of Chicago in after-school programs and summer camps. Children and parents have access to 32 clubs across the city. Organizations like these are so important because children need safe play havens to learn, socialize, and just be young!
On Friday, August 7th, the Good Glam Gala will combine fashion, shopping and philanthropy as the event raised money for the BGCC. Attendess will watch a live fashion show featuring the designs of Kate Boggiano and Objets d’Envy jewelry. The glamorous event, held at a stylish Pilsen warehouse (2150 S. Canal), will kickoff at 7p. Tickets are $50, and can be purchased at www.goodglamgala.com.

Thanks to Luvvie’s recent Born to Fit event, I am now the recipient of a new pair of great jeans. In true giving fashion, I should ask myself if there is an old pair that I now don’t need. If you have some too small/too big denim that you no longer want, then The Shops at North Bridge (520 N. Michigan Ave) want you to bring them downtown.
From now until August 13th, when you bring your new or gently used denim to the Concierge Desk located on Level 1, you will receive special offers from stores located within the building. Retailers include Ann Taylor Loft, Sephora, Benetton and more. In addition to discounts, check out these two related events:
8/8: Sephora Jean Event – When you bring in a pair of jeans, you will get an express service consultation and a deluxe goodie bag.
8/13: Love Your Genes Fashion Event at Nordstrom – From 5:30-7:30p, when you bring in a pair of denim, you can receive denim fit advice from experts, enjoy a denim-focused fashion show, and enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres!
All the donations will benefit Deborah’s Place, a provider of 5 permanent supportive housing structures and services to single, homeless women in the City of Chicago. Learn more about the fantastic organization when you visit www.deborahsplace.org!
