Fight Hunger with Beyoncé

Queen Bey has partnered with Hamburger Helper and Feeding America to help fight childhood hunger in America. The goal of the “Show Your Helping Hand” campaign is to help Feeding America deliver 3.5 million meals to food banks across the country.

According to Feeding America, one in eight Americans struggles with hunger. And, here are some additional statistics:

  • Households with children have nearly double the hunger rates of families without children.
  • More than 40 percent of families who visit food pantries served by Feeding America live in the suburbs.
  • Nearly 40 percent of those who visit food pantries are the working poor: those who work, but whose paychecks do not cover the basic necessities of life.
  • Nearly 3 million elderly people are served by Feeding America each year.

You can help in three ways:

1. Enter codes found on specially marked boxes of Hamburger Helper. For every code entered, Hamburger Helper will make a donation to a local food bank…enough to provide one meal.

2. Bring non-perishable food items to Beyoncé’s “I Am Sasha Fierce” tour dates. (Chicago – July 17th)

3. Donate funds directly to Feeding America.

In addition to the concert dates, Show Your Helping Hand has hosted several retail events at grocers in select tour stops. The events allow people to donate canned goods, learn more about hunger, watch a multi-media tribute to Beyoncé’s philanthropic/career achievements, and record a testimonial about what you are personally doing to fight hunger. The remaining retail events are:

July 10 – Safeway
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
5130 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94611

July 12 – Vons
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
500 E. Manchester Blvd, Inglewood, CA 90301

July 15 – Cub Foods
4:30 PM – 7:30 PM
7555 West Broadway Ave, Brooklyn Park, MN 55428

July 15 – Dominick’s
4:30 PM – 7:30 PM
2550 N. Clybourn Ave, Chicago, IL 60614

July 17 – Jewel-Osco
4:30 PM – 7:30 PM

LaLa’s a Fab Giver!

15 06 2009

This weekend, LaLa Vasquez, the host of Charm School, tipped her hat to charity in two great and fabulous ways. First, she put her super-fabulous 2006 custom pink Range Rover up for auction, in order to raise funds for US Doctors for Africa.

The current bid on the SUV is $27,100, and the auction closes on June 21. For the details and to place your bid, click here.

Now, yesterday, she embraced her inner glam punk goddess and shaved off the side of her head, in a remix to a style displayed by singer, Cassie, a few weeks ago!

LaLa posted a picture on Twitter, and also stated that she donated the shaved hair to “Locks of Love,” an organization which makes and provides wigs for disadvantaged children living with long-term illnesses.

I’ve always been a big fan of Lala’s, so I’m very happy to give her a TFG thumbs up for her charitable deeds!

Kiehl’s Gives Back

12 05 2009

A couple of weeks ago, I started following Kiehl’s on Twitter (@kiehlsnyc), and noticed every now and then they would donate 100% of sales of any given item to the Waterkeeper Alliance. They called the campaign “10/10/10,” which essentially meant that for 10 days they sold 10 products for only $10 and donated 100% of the sales to the Waterkeeper Alliance, up to $10K. Got it?

Well, the 10/10/10 campaign is over, but that doesn’t mean that Kiehl’s commitment to charitable causes has ended. While browsing KiehlsGivesBack.com, I learned about two other initiatives that the company is sponsoring.

The first, in continuing support of Waterkeeper Alliance, is the donation of 100% of sales of limited edition bottles of the Superbly Restorative Argan Body Lotion line ($55). Kiehl’s partnered with 3 celebrities (Adrian Grenier, Erykah Badu, Kelly Slater) and Parsons School of Design to develop artsy labels related to each person/institution (Clockwise: Grenier, Badu, Parsons, Slater).

The lotions, developed with argan oil and Vitamin E, are said to create an ultimate barrier of softness for your skin. Knowing Kiehl’s reputation with eco-friendly and amazing products, I don’t doubt this!

kiehlslipbalmIn addition, Kiehl’s has partnered with YouthAIDS, an organization committed to reaching and education youth in over 60 countries about HIV/AIDS. The brand has created new limited edition packaging of their Classic Lip Balm ($8.50) to benefit the organization.

So, folks, there you have it! Be sure to pop on over to KiehlsGivesBack.com to learn more about their dedication to the environment and various causes over time! And, if you’re in Chicago, click here to find out details for tonight’s (5/12) screening of Sundance’s new original series Eco Trip: The Real Cost of Living at the West Armitage store (907 West Armitage). Cocktails will be provided AND attendees will receive 10% off of all purchases!

Party Over Here!

18 04 2009

I’m a firm believer in work hard and play hard! Especially if you’re talking about playing for charity! This is why I’m so excited to participate in a nationwide initiative sponsored by Johnson & Johnson. J&J has selected bloggers across the country to host a Johnson’s Body Care Cause Party. These parties are supposed to celebrate girlfriends, being beautiful, and of course, making a difference.

Ashanti actually hosted the first cause party and she raised funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem.

I’ve selected the Chicago Women’s AIDS Project to be the recipient of my cause party funds. The Chicago Women’s AIDS Project is the only organization in Chicago solely dedicated to providing gender-specific HIV prevention and care services to women at risk.

I’ve always wanted to break into party and event planning, so this event is a perfect opportunity to start! I’m still in the process of nailing down a date, but the wheels are already spinning on party favors, the menu, and themed cocktails! I will be sure to post a recap of the event…once it’s actually over!
