Beautiful Dreses by Audey

10 04 2009

While I was researching local boutique, Florodora, for my first Chicagonista article, I had the opportunity to view the website and feminine designs of Audey, a Chicago-based line.

Visitors can expect a-line hems and bold floral patterns. You can order a dress online or request a custom dress be made just the way that you like. A portion of all sales benefit Equality Now, an international human rights organization dedicated to action for the civil, political, economic and social rights of girls and women.

For more information, please visit www.audey.com.

Busy Buzzing Around Chicago

22 03 2009

Hey, hey, hey! How’s everyone been doing?

It’s been busy, busy, busy here in Chicago and I think the fantastic weather has had something to do with it! Here’s my mini-recap of what’s been happening in my world:

  • I started bikram yoga classes on Thursday! If you haven’t heard of it, bikram is yoga in a room heated to 105 degrees. Yes, I’m absolutely serious. I’ve already taken two classes and must say that I’m hooked. I’m focusing on my breathing and oneness, and I can feel the toxins leaving my body. The only downside is the whole hair issue. When you’re putting in work in 105 degrees, the amount of sweat is crazy. But, I don’t want to discourage you! Here’s the website to the studio I attend: www.bikramcitychicago.com! Best part? They give you freeze pops after class!!! YES! 🙂
  • I stopped by Aniko Salon and Spa on Thursday night for their Aniko Dream Glam event. It was a fabulous time complete with a DJ, wine, cupcakes, beautiful people, shopping, and beauty treatments! I had to haul ass to yoga so I only stayed long enough to chat with Sarah (Chic Gems), Marti (Aniko Owner), and Jenny (Evlove Intimates); and get a skin analysis. The proceeds from the event benefitted Dreams for Kids
  • Saturday morning, I volunteered for MS Day at the Museum of Science and Industry. Each year, the MS Society provides free admission and lunch to families affected by MS. It’s one of my favorite events to work, and this year was noooo different! It’s nice to see everyone just enjoy themselves and one of the coolest museums in the city!
  • Saturday afternoon, I popped into the “Each One, Teach One” female condom training and advocacy workshop. It was absolutely amazing to see young girls actively taking a role in their health, having discussions amongst themselves, and asking the educators questions. On the other end of the room, the women were talking about what they could do to make sure that young girls (and guys) were educated about safe sex. Thanks to the Chicago Women’s AIDS Project for the invite/information. I’m going to post pictures/video from the event on The Red Pump Project website!

Whew! So, as you can see…it’s been nonstop, and honestly, it’s only going to get crazier! I can’t wait!!! 🙂

Red Pumps and Needed Conversation!

10 03 2009

redpp-01

Today is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, an initiative started to discuss the impact of HIV/AIDS on the lives of women and girls, and motivate us to take action. When I last was tested in December (around World AIDS Day), I remember the counselor telling me that he was seeing young girls coming in and being diagnosed with HIV. I mean, young…He told me that he recently told a 13-year old girl that she was positive. 13!

Not that I think The Red Pump Project needs an explanation, but if I had to break it down…Luvvie and I are doing this simply because it has to be done. HIV/AIDS is very real and women and girls, especially Black and Latinas, are really being hit hard by this disease. So, we need to organize and do what we can to talk about this disease, talk about testing, and take steps to educate and protect ourselves.

Ladies, I hope you use this day to research the statistics and take a vow that you’ll protect yourselves at all costs. Guys, use today to think about how you can play a role in HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. After all, we’re all connected and what affects one of us, affects all of us!

We’ve uploaded some Women and AIDS statistics to The Red Pump Project website, so stop on by there and get some knowledge!

Before I go any further, I have to give a huge “THANK YOU!!!” to all the fantastic bloggers who signed up to “Rock the Red Pump.” When Luvvie and I came up with the idea, we hoped that others would support the mission and the purpose behind it…And, so many of you did! See below for a list of allllll the amazing peeps rocking the red pump and helping to spread the word about the impact of HIV/AIDS in women and girls!!!
