Charity Chicks Houston Founders at an Event

Charity Chicks Houston Founders at an Event

I had the extreme pleasure of coming across Charity Chicks Houston during a random Twitter search for “charity.” What I discovered has truly been amazing and inspiring all at once! After learning about Charity Chicks Orlando, Tam’ra and Jayme, decided to incorporate a similar idea in Houston. Charity Chicks have been fundraising and volunteering their services all over H-Town for some great causes. In the past, the group has volunteered at charity walks and raise funds via chic happy hours.

If you’re living it up in H-Town and looking for ways to get involved and meet other great “chicks,” there is a listing of upcoming events posted on the site. And, even if you can’t make an upcoming CC event, the site includes other great opportunities in Houston and resources/organizations that are always looking for extra hands!

NYC Event: Shop Kenneth Cole for Charity

16 06 2009

The Kenneth Cole store in Grand Central Station will be hosting a summer shopping event on Thursday, June 25th to benefit Making Books Sing’s S.A.F.E. Program. The S.A.F.E. (Shelter, Arts, Family, Education) program is a two-year old initiative designed to “engage homeless families in creative experiences that foster self-expression, literacy development, and family time.”

From 6-9p, guests will enjoy an evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and shopping! And, a generous portion of the evening’s sales will be donated in support of the S.A.F.E. Program.

When I walked past the KC store on Michigan Ave (Chicago) last week, I saw some great sandals in there for the ladies and very nice bags (of course) for the guys. If you’re in NYC, you should definitely join the summer soiree on your way home from work!

Goodwill (Dress) Hunting

15 06 2009

This weekend, my sister and I drove down to Alton, IL to watch our aunt and uncle renew their vows in honor of their 25th wedding anniversary. The ceremony was beautiful and we had a great time getting reacquainted with our mother’s hometown. Yesterday, we decided to do some exploring and check out some of the shops.

Across the street from our hotel was a Goodwill store. While we went in there just to look around and possibly shop, we ended up falling in love with one particular section of the store…The wedding gowns!

CIMG0815I don’t know if it was the nuptial theme of the weekend, but we spent more time fawning and feigning over those gowns than anything else in the store! When many women dream of walking down the aisle, they never think of walking down the aisle in a stranger’s dress! But, with times the way that they are, and the growing recycle/reuse movement, there is a growing number of women who have no issue purchasing a second-hand gown.

The first thing we noticed in the section was that some of the gowns in the store were very, hmm…let’s say dated. There were definitely some poofy sleeves and crazy necklines. The second thing we noticed, and the most important thing, were the amazing trains and beading on a few of those gowns. So intricately designed…and at such GREAT bargains! Of course, any one who purchased a gown would need to have it worked on (i.e., altering, cleaning, etc). That is with the exception of one gown…

There was a gorgeous Cinderella dress that was my size and absolutely beautiful. I tried it on and was borderline obsessed with it. My sister almost bought it for me! It would have definitely been my reception gown.

I'm Cinderella!

So beautiful and only $125!

Here are some more pics from our excursion:

Another Gown

We didn’t buy any wedding gowns, but at the end of the day, my sister snagged four dresses (including the silk Banana Republic dress below), two wrap sweaters, and a pair of sunglasses for about $34. Whoo hoo!!!

All purchases at Goodwill stores benefit the job training and other programs supported by Goodwill Industries. You can find your nearest Goodwill store by visiting www.goodwill.org!
