NARS Wants You Safe and Beautiful

9 07 2009

Nars_P223609_heroThe beauty brand with sexy product names like Pillow Talk, Striptease, and more want you to have a safe and beautiful “orgasm.” Yes, that is a very intentional pun. The NARS Safer Multiple Orgasm kit contains the creamy Multiple in Orgasm along with two condoms. The Multiple is a creamy stick of color which can be applied to eyes, cheeks, and lips.

A portion of the sales from each kit benefit the global safe sex initiatives of American Foundation for AIDS Research (amFAR). The price of the kit is $37, and can be purchased on the NARS website or at your local Sephora.

Summer of Service

8 07 2009

Happy Wednesday! Here are a couple great Chicago service opportunities that I’ve come across!

7/11: From 10:45-2p, be part of an unique grocery shopping experience! Vital Bridges runs four grocery centers across Chicago that cater to the specific dietary needs of people living with HIV. Clients fill out their grocery menu and you shop the food pantry for the items. For the details, click here.

7/25-7/27: If you speak fluent Spanish and have great communication skills, then the National MS Society could use your assistance at the Latino Expo USA and Health Fair. They will be providing information about the disease and programs and services offered by the Society. Training will be provided prior to the actual event dates. Interested? Email sarah.gross@ild.nmss.org. (Not this week, but training needs to be scheduled soon)

As always, these are a verrrry small sample of the opportunities that are out there! If you’re stuck and don’t know where to start, I would check out the following sites:

ChicagoCares.org

NewYorkCares.org

VolunteerMatch.org

Idealist.org

Serve.gov

DCCares.org

I also have some tips on jumpstarting your volunteer experience in my post “Just Volunteer. Period.

If you have a summer volunteer opportunity that you would like for me to include, shoot an email over to kb@thefabulousgiver.com! I will post them every Tuesday (or Wednesday) at the latest!

I am very VERY excited to announce that we’ve launched a new and improved webpage for The Red Pump Project! I have to give a huge kudos to Luvvie for her tech prowess and all that she did to make this happen! Head on over there and let us know your feedback!

ALSO *drumroll* We’ve officially launched the male counterpart to The Red Pump Project! That’s right, The Red Tie Project, is now up and active. Now that we have both sexes covered, it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty and do some serious work to spread education and awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS!

Check the fellas out at www.theredtieproject.com!

If you want to get involved, please shoot me an email at karyn@theredpumpproject.com!

Housing Works’ Great Finds

10 06 2009

Yesterday, I posted about the SoHo Stroll and one of the participants was the Housing Works Thrift Store. Housing Works is the largest community-based AIDS service organization in the United States, as well as the nation’s largest minority-controlled AIDS service organization. Since they were founded in 1990, they’ve provided “lifesaving services, such as housing, medical and mental health care, meals, job training, drug treatment, HIV prevention education, and social support to more than 20,000 homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS.”

In addition to their thrift stores, they also operate the The Works Catering and Housing Works Bookstore Cafe to help pay for the services of the programs and provide employment opportunities to program graduates! Housing Works operates 9 upscale thrift stores in NYC, so you’re sure to find something that peaks your interest (and gives back).

If you’re not in NYC, you can also shop some of their great finds online. Similar to eBay, you can either bid on the items or “buy them now.” There are way too many great finds on the website. I’ve pulled a few of my favorites below:

Roberto Cavalli Dress, $285

Large Vase, Current Bid $35
